The Power of 10 Campaign
The Power of 10 Campaign was first announced at ACE 2009 in Nashville, Tennessee. Basically the goal is for 10,000 MTs to give $10 through 2010 with all of the proceeds to be earmarked for our advocacy efforts throughout the year. AHDI is aware of the fact that this is indeed an ambitious goal but it was designed to reach out to both members and non-members so that all MTs have a voice.
We primed the pump during one of our keynote presentations at ACE with attendees contributing close to $2000 – one $10 donation at a time. This was very inspiring to watch and brought tears to the eyes of many. We felt so unified as MTs began leaving their seats and walking to the front of the stage with their individual donations in hand. We were truly a large group acting as one – and isn’t that what advocacy is all about?
It is critical that every member promote the Power of 10 Campaign within their own component so that the success of this effort can be shared as a group.
Here are a few ways components can help us reach our goal:
1. Go beyond promoting the campaign to your members and symposia attendees by collecting money on site and submitting a lump-sum donation on behalf of your component.
2. Consider partnering with the AHDI-West regional component in promoting and participating in their year-long technology webinar series, with funds to be donated to Power of 10. Contact Kat King (katking99@msn.com) or Carrie Boatman (carrieboatman@frontiernet.net) for more information on how to collaborate with AHDI-West.
3. Host a fund-raising event in early 2010 to support the campaign through a garage sale, used book sale, walk-a-thon, or other effort.
4. Reach out to nonmember MTs in your local community and in your workplace to generate interest in Power of 10, keeping in mind that AHDI is reaching across membership lines for this campaign to make sure every MT, whether member or not, has a shared voice in our advocacy efforts.
In order to help you promote this critical initiative through your component over the next year, you can download the Power of 10 graphic and flyer below. Component groups have permission to use the graphic and flyer at your discretion, including logo items, T-shirts, buttons, etc.

So, what do you say, what will the Carolinas Regional contribution be for the Power of 10 Campaign?

We are currently at a shortage of Mentors for AHDI’s Mentorship Program! Serving as a mentor can be a rewarding experience for an MT practitioner. It is an opportunity to develop and expand leadership capabilities by investing in the future of an MT student or postgraduate. You can enhance your coaching and communication skills while sharing both life and work lessons with the student or postgraduate—guiding, encouraging, and inspiring them to achieve worthwhile goals. There is great satisfaction to be found in helping another to succeed, and this is a real opportunity to enhance your contribution to the profession!
Beginning June 1, 2009, (and retroactively) participating as a Mentor will also help you accumulate CECs! For each Mentee you are paired with you will earn 1 Professional Development CEC toward your CMT recertification. For more information on becoming a mentor, review the Mentorship Program Policies. Please email btwist@ahdionline.org today to volunteer.

SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY (from November 2009 meeting) I've just returned from a wonderful meeting - the Carolinas Regional Symposium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Following a lovely reception on Friday evening with a magician doing card tricks at each table [amazing] the Saturday all-day session contained some of the best speakers I've heard in a long time. From PET scanning to plastic surgery to an infectious disease update including H1N1 flu, RAC audits, and the evolving profession of medical transcription by our own Brenda Hurley.
The Southern hospitality was in abundance everywhere your turned from some of the most dedicated medical documentation professionals anywhere. I would highly recommend attendance at this meeting next year if at all possible. I assure you, you won't be disappointed.
